MACROECONOMIC OVERVIEW

Sweden has a robust and well-diversified economy characterized by high competitiveness and productivity. Innovation and new technologies, along with manufacturing, are the backbone of Swedish industry.

The stability of the macroeconomic situation has been bolstered by legislative measures adopted in the past. Sweden introduced a ceiling for public spending in 1996, followed by the debt anchor („skuldankare“) in 2019, which aims to keep long-term debt below 35%.

The country overcame the pandemic in relatively good shape, yet its economic growth and inflation (which reached a 30-year high) have been affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This happened despite the fact that Sweden is less dependent on fossil fuel imports, given that 66% of its energy comes from renewable sources (mainly hydropower, wind, biofuels, and heat pumps). High prices have reduced household consumption, and the recovery is projected to be slow.
