Clean Technologies in the Czech Republic – updating EasyLink's 2018 report |
|
---|---|
Completion: | 2021 - 10 |
Target markets: | CZ |
Objective: | EasyLink was commissioned to update its Czech clean technologies market study that was initially produced in 2016 and updated in 2018. |
Results: | Upon EasyLink´s recommendation, the 2021 market profile included several new chapters to address the latest trends. For instance, activities in the area of soil and forest protection were newly mapped to cover negative effects of global warming, years of unsustainable farming methods, and strategically wrong approach to handling of rainwater (insufficient retention in the landscape). The Czech Republic, with its largely coniferous forests, has recently become Europe’s epicenter of a spruce bark beetle outbreak fueled by periods of hot and dry weather, which weakened natural defense mechanisms of trees and facilitated reproduction of the beetle. In future, bark beetle infestation could affect up to a half of the country’s forests. Specific opportunities were analyzed in the area of clean technologies for households (heat pumps, solar panels, household boilers), community energy projects, clean mobility, IoT and AI, waste-to-energy technologies, biogas/biomethane conversion, smart cities solutions, green buildings, and large-scale energy storage solutions. |
Market analysis: Coal phase out in the Czech Republic |
|
---|---|
Completion: | 2020 - 12 |
Target markets: | CZ |
Objective: | EasyLink was asked to identify prospective opportunities that will arise as the country prepares for coal phase-out. |
Results: | In December 2020, the government’s expert body known as the Coal Commission issued a recommendation for exit from use of coal by 2038; two alternative scenarios were also considered – 2033 and 2043. Coal phase-out will lead to a significant shift in the country’s energy mix. Brown coal is now its single largest resource fueling 40% of its gross electricity production and 42% of its heat generation. Significantly lower use of hard coal drives 2% of electricity and 9% of heat generation. Business opportunities exist for suppliers of high-end, advanced & smart equipment and technologies. Natural gas, still a fossil fuel, provides a solution on the way to coal phase-out; utilization of an entire generation of gas burning plants is expected before their decommissioning around 2050. The State Energy Policy and the follow-up National Action Plan for Nuclear Energy Development declare the government´s interest in further development of nuclear energy in the Czech Republic. Currently, six nuclear reactors operate in two plants (Temelin and Dukovany). The existing reactors in the Dukovany nuclear plant are scheduled to close down between 2035 and 2037, although discussion is underway about extending their operation until 2045. A new reactor is planned instead. Some experts propose installing small modular reactors instead of building large nuclear plants. Environmental experts argue that the country is not ambitious enough with its plans for renewable resources; some argue that with a gradual increase in the share of renewable resources and natural gas, even this landlocked country could manage without coal and nuclear power. Renewable resources fueled 11.6% of gross electricity generation in 2019. Their share grew significantly from 2005 to 2013 but has remained stable since 2013. Legislation concerning community energy projects has not yet been adopted (unlikely to become effective until January 2023). Several municipalities have taken their own initiative in this direction. Around 45 municipalities own decentralized renewable energy power plants, of which a majority are biomass heating plants. Only three municipalities own wind power plants, four have small hydro power plants, and seven have photovoltaic plants. The village of Kněžice (500 inhabitants) is considered the first energy self-sufficient municipality in the country. Community energy initiatives are also supported by administration of the capital city of Prague. Integration of emerging Energy 4.0 technologies such as Cloud, Internet of Things (IoT), big data information management, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning already takes place in the Czech energy sector. |
Market study: Waste water treatment and preparation of drinking water |
|
---|---|
Completion: | 2020 - 11 |
Target markets: | CZ |
Objective: | EasyLink was asked to map the waste water and preparation of drinking water segment and outline opportunities in specific subsegments. |
Results: | In the Czech Republic, the average per capita consumption of water reached 90.6 liters in 2019, down from 170 liters in late 1980s. Over 1.5 million people (14.5% of population) reside in homes not connected to sewerage systems. Out of the volume of wastewater discharged into sewerage systems, 97.6% is treated (compared to 71.5% in 1989). The improvement is a result of intense development of new and intensification of existing waste water treatment plants, partly driven by legislative requirements related to accession of the country to the EU in 2004. The country has over 2,700 wastewater treatment plants. All agglomerations over 2,000 people are connected to a sewerage system with a modern WWTP. Upcoming projects in municipalities typically include modernization or intensification of a plant, often needed due to development of new housing. The projects aim not only at quality treatment of waste water, but also at energy efficiency of the plants. In recent years, the spotlight has been on development of sewerage and waste water treatment infrastructure in municipalities under 2,000 people. Typically installed technologies include decentralized (household) wastewater treatment plants and root zone technology. The municipalities were able to draw subsidies for project funding. The fifty largest drinking water management companies represent almost 89% of all drinking water supply. In total, there are close to 6,900 owners and 2,900 operators of water management infrastructure. Business opportunities exist for companies supplying high-end & smart equipment and technologies for the water management sector. Specific product categories may include advanced technologies for modernization of water supply, sewerage, and waste water treatment infrastructure, smart metering systems, technologies for IoT infrastructure (solutions, sensors, etc.), and digitalization/automation solutions for the entire water management cycle, cybersecurity and control systems, smart solutions for ensuring physical security of water management infrastructure and advanced leak detection systems. |

However, problems still persist, especially in the area of air pollution. In 2014, over a third of annual environmental protection investment funds went into wastewater management, 30% into ambient air and climate protection, 16% into waste management, and 6% into soil, groundwater and surface water protection and remediation. The Czech Republic is self-sufficient in electricity production; nuclear and fossil fuel power plants account for 87% of electricity generated annually in the Czech Republic. Renewable resources accounted for slightly under 11% of total electricity generated in the Czech Republic in 2014. Since 1990, the Czech Republic has enjoyed an uninterrupted improvement in energy efficiency. Still, within EU28 member countries, the Czech Republic recorded one of the highest energy intensity in 2013. Debates have been led among various stakeholders as to how to achieve energy savings. Some argue that the potential for savings is mainly in the industry, others believe it rests in operating more efficient buildings. Numerous tools and initiatives are being employed to achieve higher energy efficiency in the Czech Republic. Examples of environmental technologies currently evaluated and considered include waste-to-energy and waste reuse technologies, smart cities solutions and green buildings. The Czech environmental and clean technologies sector is fairly developed, but open to innovative designs. The European Union directives and subsidies drive the demand for clean/green technologies. |

EasyLink was commissioned to explore business opportunities in Poland and arrange face-to-face meetings with prospective partners such as municipalities, waste management consultants, waste collection companies who do not yet have a waste processing plant and companies running their own plant that need to expand or rebuild it, ideally a waste company who currently cannot provide the full service. Also, the client was interested in basic stats on household production of solid waste and recycled waste in Poland. |
Results: | While contacting companies involved in waste management, environmental consulting, municipal companies and municipal authorities we gathered that waste sorting plants in Poland were developed not by single municipalities, but rather by associations of municipalities and special purpose companies created by such associations. Collaboration with a local consulting company was identified as the most effective route to market for the client. Poland generates approx. 12-13 million tonnes of waste annually. The EU legislation mandates Poland to reduce the number of landfills, and increase the share of waste recollection substantially; this thus makes recycling and sorting the most promising areas of the waste management business in Poland. 6 companies expressed interest in meeting/partnership opportunity. |

Among other experts, the consultant approached the former Minister of Construction and Regional Development who had previously worked on several geothermal projects and has contacts to Mayors of cities with geothermal potential and professors at the University in Kosice - Department of oil engineering. The pre-selected and recommended prospects were contacted by telephone for a brief conversation about the possibility of establishing mutual cooperation with the client. Meetings were scheduled with mayors of four towns, a geothermal energy specialist, a technology company, and an operator of a health resort in a village in Southern Slovakia. |

Completion: | 2003 - 12 |
Target markets: | CZ + SK |
Objective: | After studying the research project report previously prepared by EasyLink, which pointed out market potential as well as funding opportunities exist in the Czech Republic for waste water treatment technologies, the client proceeded with another request for EasyLink’s assistance, this time for a matchmaking project to identify and meet prospective joint venture partners in both countries. |
Results: | We analysed the Czech and Slovak construction markets and pre-selected potential JV partners, primarily for medium-size to larger projects in the water and wastewater sectors. In line with the general criteria provided by the client, and using additional criteria defined by our team, we identified about 15 companies in each country for further screening and direct contact. Out of 10 Czech and 8 Slovak companies that confirmed interest in meeting the client, we selected/recommended the 5 most qualified prospects in each country. EasyLink then prepared a detailed itinerary for client’s 5-day visit to meet a total of 12 Czech and Slovak entities selected after discussion with the client. The client was accompanied to all the meetings by EasyLink’s consultant. After the visit we assisted the client with obtaining annual reports of selected companies and preparation of Memorandum of Understanding in two-languages. |
First step in a series of projects for an Irish specialist in waste water treatment technology |
|
---|---|
Completion: | 2003 - 09 |
Target markets: | CZ + SK |
Objective: | This was the first project undertaken for this client over a period of 2 years during which we took the client through the entire market entry process starting with market potential evaluation all the way to signing a joint venture agreement. The task of this particular research project was to establish details on EU funded (ISPA, Cohesion or Structural) Wastewater Treatment Plant Construction Projects planned for both the Czech and Slovak Republics and provide details of the current market situation. |
Results: | EasyLink consultants prepared detailed close to 20-page reports for their respective countries that contained information on current drinking water supply and waste water sources, required investment and sources of financing (state and EU funding). Our resources included information published by the government, e.g. Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, fund-distributing agencies (e.g. State Environmental Fund) as well as personal interviews with relevant Ministry of Environment officials. When the reports were being prepared, the situation in terms of funding available from EU programs was somewhat “complicated” due to upcoming accession of the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the EU, and thus the “old” programs, including ISPA, Sapard, and Phare were being gradually reduced, while funding from structural and cohesion funds was to only become available. |
